Why YOU Should Switch To Body Butter
Palmer's, Johnson & Johnson or Victoria's Secret?
I believe I first heard about body butter around a decade ago. Growing up and well into my adult years, everyone knew that in order to moisturize your skin, lotion was your friend, right?
Memories of what I put on my skin in my "hay days," certainly come vividly. My preference in my youth was mostly Palmers Cocoa Butter lotion; I think it was relatively well known that cocoa butter was good for your skin and I loved the smell of Palmers-I can almost smell it now as I close my eyes.
I guess it shouldn't really be a surprise that these scents were popular amongst teenagers, and adults as well, because who can resist the scent of a freshly washed and Johnson's doused baby?
As a young adult, the fragrance of choice HAD to be the Victoria Secret's body mist line! A couple of my favourites were the pear, apple and vanilla scents. At that time, I think the intent was to leave behind a waft of innocent sexiness, was it not?
I'm not sure how many people actually take the time to skim the label to see which ingredients we are choosing to put onto our precious skin. We don't seem to be concerned about the fact that our skin absorbs roughly 60% of what we put on topically, we just wanted to smell good.
As I grew older, more aware and wiser, I became more receptive to alternative ways to moisturise the skin; I didn't have the need to just stick to what I knew or what was more widely used. The health of myself and my family became more important than the most popular perfume on the shelf.
I tried HARD to recall exactly when I began hearing about body butter, but couldn't. All I know is that when I learned about it, EVERYONE seemed to be talking about it. I also tried to remember whether I tried someone else's body butter before my own, but my memory failed me. Therefore, I will start with MY body butter!
Roughly 6 years ago, I made my body butter for the first time. It was necessitated by the need to find a natural eczema cream for my two youngest daughter's mild eczema. I spoke about it a bit in the "About Us" section of this website, but I'll summarize it here.
At the time, my daughters were about 2 and 4 years old and had mild eczema; I had suffered from more severe eczema as a child. My children were due for a wellness check; I pointed it out to the doctor and was advised which eczema cream I should purchase.
I'm not sure what prompted me to do it this time, but I read the ingredient list. This is something I NEVER did before when it came to doctor's recommendations-I had blind faith. This time, though, I went to the internet to research any ingredients I didn't recognize and was SHOCKED to find there were steroids and other chemicals contained within the cream.
Knowing what was in the cream, there was no way I was going to put those nasties onto the precious skin of my girls. I immediately began researching natural treatments for eczema and I stumbled across a YouTube video of a beautiful young lady, making body butter and I was drawn to the process. I mean, it was beautiful! I was mesmerized how it all began with a combination of raw solids and liquids and became this beautifully whipped cloud of nourishment for the skin-I wanted EVERYTHING to do with it!
I immediately ordered everything need to make the body butter and while I waited, I researched other natural ingredients which would assist in healing my daughter's eczema and decided to try aloe, as the raw plant was something I remember my mother putting onto my skin when I had eczema pretty bad. I also looked up the best essential oils to use for the condition.
Once all the ingredients came and I was armed, I made my body butter alongside a YouTube tutoriaI had watched the first time-I'll create another blog to show you the video and how my body butter journey began.
I found the process to be very therapeutic and somehow, I felt powerful; I was taking control of my daughter's health and healing and I KNEW I was going to produce something great...and I did!
My body butter came out perfect the very first time. My children loved it from day one-perhaps they also thought it was magical how the body butter went from looking liked whipped cream to melting on their skin instantly when it came into contact with its warmth.
Maybe it was a combination between that and how luxurious it felt as it glided onto their skin-leaving a trail of sunshine, before being absorbed and becoming more of a light sheen. Who knows, but it was a hit with our entire family! Body butter was in our household to stay!
Thankfully, between our plant-based diet, changes in our skincare and even switching to natural detergents and cleaning products, my daughter's eczema cleared up.
